Flexible packings- for maximum life & reliability
Traditionally packings are hard packed into their stuffing box to minimise leakage, often at the expense of shaft wear, friction and power loss. Therefore, where shaft deflections are high or excessive vibrations can occur the packings plastically deform creating clearance between the shaft and the ID of the packing increasing leakage.

In slurry pumps such problems can result in abrasive media becoming trapped between the packing and shaft producing excessive wear and leakage plus rapid seal failure. High leakage rates can also swamp adjacent bearing housing seals resulting in their rapid failure also.
Flexible packings greatly minimise such phenomenon their elastomeric core constantly deflecting in sympathy with shaft and bearing movements resulting in no permanent deformation. This flexibility further reduces the contact pressure of the fibres with the shaft greatly reducing wear. Added to this lubricant slowly migrates from the centre of the elastomeric core further reducing frictional losses and prolonging system life.

Flexible packings are supplied pre-shrunk, cut to size, lubricated and ready to install. Standard sections and profiles are readily available with special sections to order. They require little or no change to existing designs based on conventional packings and virtually any size can be supplied.
In conclusion, elastic packings provide…
- Increased life and reliability
- Reduced friction and energy consumption
- Reduced maintenance and a cleaner environment
- Lowest life time cost solution
